Home health care services are paid for in a number of different ways depending on the individual patient and largely on their own financial history. In many cases, home health care is provided by home health agencies that are Medicare certified therefore Medicare foots the bill. Some home health agencies accept other types of third party payers, insurance and also provide flexible financing or cash options to allow for the payment of home health care services.
The cost of home health care varies significantly from state to state and this cost will also fluctuate based on the type of health care that is required by the patient. Some home care, such as non medical care and companionship will be less costly than say in home x-Rays or other lab tests, around the clock monitoring or skilled nurse care. Regardless of the type of care that you or your loved one needs it's important to be prepared and fully informed of how much the home care services will cost as well as what portion of that cost will come out of pocket.
Medicare will pay for an individual's home care if the patient is unable to get out of there home whether due to medical illness or other situation and is under the care of a doctor who has written a home health care plan specifically for that particular patient. Additionally, the patient must be Medicare eligible and the home health services that are ordered by the doctor must be medically necessary. Home health agencies that provide home care to patients with Medicare must also be certified under the Medicare program in order for the patient to utilize the third party billing for such services. Finally, Medicare also requires that any individual requiring home care services have a need for skilled nursing care, or therapy such as physical or occupational therapy on a regular basis.
There are also various other third part payers for home care services. Medicaid pays for home care under similarly strict guidelines as the Medicare program. Additionally, the Veterans Administration (VA) has various home health care options for those who qualify for the Veteran's health services.
Various services are not covered by insurance or third party payers. These expenses must either not be incurred or they will have to be paid out of the pocket of the patient (or family members of the patient). Prior to entering an agreement for home health care it's important that all costs and coverages be addressed to assure that the care will be within the budget of the patient or their family.
Often times, family members will foot much of the cost of home care when such care is not covered by Medicare or other third party payers. Insurance often falls short, especially when long term home care is required. If a loved one is in need of long term home care due to a medical condition, illness or injury, it's important for family members to work together to come up with a budget that can help the loved one to receive care that meets their individual needs.
